Three constraints before any code projectArabic

Three Constraints Before Any Code Project
The one practice that stops scope creep before it starts.

Most people begin a code project by describing what they want. The problem is that description alone is enough to lose weeks. Claude, or any AI coding tool, does exactly what you ask. Without clear boundaries, the project expands alongside you at every step. The fix is not a better prompt. It is three written constraints, defined before the first prompt is ever sent.

🧩 What it actually is

The three constraints are hard limits written before any code is generated. They define what the project does, what it does not do, and what finished looks like. Think of it like placing the border pieces of a jigsaw puzzle before you touch the middle. Without the border, every piece looks like a possibility. With it, the decision becomes immediate: this belongs here or it does not.

A constraint is not a description. A description says "I want a photo gallery website." A constraint says "this website will not include user authentication." That second sentence saves at least three hours.

⚙️ How it works

Say you are building a simple landing page for a side project. Before opening Claude, you write three sentences:

1️⃣ Scope limit: what is explicitly out of scope
This sentence closes the door on any feature that feels nice but is not essential. Example: "This page will not include any forms or backend logic."

2️⃣ Tech limit: the exact tools and stack in play
Do not say "I want it to be fast." Say: "This project uses plain HTML and CSS only, with no external JavaScript libraries." This prevents Claude from importing a full framework to solve a simple styling problem.

3️⃣ Done limit: what finished looks like exactly
This is the most important of the three. Example: "The project is complete when the page renders correctly on mobile and desktop with no console errors." Everything beyond that sentence is optional scope, not part of the deliverable 📌.

These three sentences become the opening block of your first prompt. Claude reads the boundaries before generating anything, and it respects them naturally.

🌍 Where you see it

This framework applies anywhere code meets expectations:

🛒 Building a lightweight online store: the scope limit stops Claude from adding a review system you never asked for
🤖 Learning to code with AI assistance: the tech limit keeps explanations in the language and tools you actually know
📱 Shipping a mobile feature fast: the done limit breaks the infinite loop of "just one more thing"
🗂️ Working with a team that uses AI for code: the three constraints become a shared document that aligns everyone before anyone starts typing

What to do next

✅ Apply the framework to any current or recent project, even retroactively, just to see where the scope had already drifted
✅ Paste the three constraints at the top of every new Claude conversation related to that project
✅ After each coding session, ask yourself: did we add anything outside the three limits, and was that a conscious choice?

The most expensive code is the code that solves a problem nobody agreed to have.
