3️⃣ Shopify CLI
🔧 Claude Code
JSON settings.
🔧 Shopify CLI
🔧 GitHub CLI

Building a Custom Shopify Store Without Writing a Line of Code
Most people assume they need a developer to build a store that looks like it cost thousands of dollars. That assumption used to be correct. It no longer is.
The problem with templates has never really been cost. It is that they force you to build on the same foundation as thousands of other stores. The design feels familiar before the customer even scrolls, and that familiarity is what kills the first impression.
**What "building without code" actually means**
You are not avoiding code. Code still needs to be written. The shift is that you are not the one writing it. Claude Code is an AI system that specializes in writing code from plain-language descriptions. You describe what you want your store to look and feel like, and it handles everything: the template structure, the layout logic, the configuration files, all of it.
Shopify handles the operational layer. Cart, checkout, payments, shipping, order management. You are building on top of a mature and proven infrastructure, and your energy goes entirely into design and experience.
**How the process actually works**
The workflow runs across three layers that operate together:
1️⃣ Claude Code writes the store code based on your description, using Shopify's Liquid templating system and Sections, which is the official way to build Shopify themes
2️⃣ Git and GitHub save snapshots of your code automatically, acting like an unlimited undo button across your entire project history
3️⃣ Shopify CLI creates a live bridge between your computer and your store, so every update you make can be previewed locally before it goes live
The result is a store that looks custom-built, without the custom-build price tag.
**Where this approach makes sense**
🛍️ A product founder who needs a store that reflects a precise visual identity, not a borrowed one
🎨 A designer who wants to translate a concept into real working code without a developer in the loop
🧪 An early-stage project that needs a professional-looking front without burning budget on agency fees
📦 A brand that wants the customer's first impression to feel deliberate and considered
**🛠️ Tools you actually use**
🔧 Claude Code
The AI that writes your store code from descriptions. It understands Shopify's structure natively and produces Liquid templates, Sections, and JSON settings without you needing to know any of that.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai/code and download the application
2️⃣ Open it in your terminal and begin describing your store in plain language
3️⃣ If you have never used it before, look for introductory walkthroughs before starting a store project
🔧 Shopify CLI
The official bridge between your computer and your Shopify store. It lets you preview your theme locally in real time and push finalized changes directly to your live store.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Install Node.js from nodejs.org, choose the LTS version
2️⃣ Run this command in your terminal: npm install -g @shopify/cli
3️⃣ Log in to your store with: shopify auth login --store your-store-name.myshopify.com
🔧 GitHub CLI
Lets you manage your code repository directly from the terminal without switching to a browser, and keeps your store connected to GitHub so updates deploy cleanly.
How to get started:
1️⃣ On Mac, run: brew install gh
2️⃣ On Windows, download from cli.github.com
3️⃣ Authenticate by running: gh auth login and following the prompts
**💡 Try it yourself: step by step**
Scenario: you have one product and want to build a homepage that reflects your brand's visual identity.
1️⃣ Open Claude Code in your terminal and say: "I want to build a custom Shopify store. I will describe the design I want and I need you to write the full code using Liquid and Sections."
2️⃣ Describe the feeling you want in specific terms: colors, typography, scroll behavior, how the product is presented. The more specific your description, the closer the output is to what you actually imagined.
3️⃣ Ask Claude Code to set up the full file structure and connect it to a GitHub repository so you can push changes to Shopify cleanly.
4️⃣ Once the code is written, run shopify theme dev in your terminal to preview the live result on your machine before anything touches your actual store.
You will see a fully custom homepage running on Shopify's infrastructure, ready to go live when you are.
**What to do next**
✅ Install Node.js and Shopify CLI and confirm they work before you open Claude Code
✅ Prepare your brand materials before you start: colors, fonts, product images, the overall feeling you want customers to walk away with
✅ Ask yourself what makes your store different from others selling the same thing. That answer is what you are building.
The developer is not disappearing. The requirement to hire one just to build your first page already has.
