I Tried Codex for a WeekArabic

🔧 Claude Code

🔧 ChatGPT Codex
Codex

I Tried Codex for a Week
The difference between two AI coding tools is not about code quality. It is about the hour you lose every single session.

When OpenAI announced Codex I opened it the same day. It wrote clean code, understood instructions, and pulled off tasks I did not expect. A week later I switched back to Claude Code, and instead of feeling like I had downgraded, I felt like I had gotten time back. The question any developer asks after using both is not which one writes better code. It is which one actually understands your project.

🧩 What the difference actually is

Both tools write good code, and the gap is invisible on a simple, isolated task. It shows up when you are working on a real project with multiple files and decisions that build on each other. Codex behaves like a new contractor every single day. You need to explain the full project context at the start of every session. Claude Code behaves like a senior developer who has been with you from day one, who remembers the architecture, the tradeoffs, and keeps building on them without being asked.

The closest real-world parallel is this: imagine you are building a house and you hire a carpenter. Codex is a skilled carpenter who shows up every morning with no memory of what he built the day before. Claude Code is the same carpenter carrying a notebook with every decision the two of you made together.

⚙️ How they differ under the hood

The technical problem has a name: context window. Every language model reads a limited amount of text per session, and once that window fills up, earlier information starts dropping out of the model's working memory.

1️⃣ You open Codex and start a new session with a limited context window for your full project
2️⃣ You ask for a change to a specific file and it executes perfectly because the instruction is clear and isolated
3️⃣ You ask for a second change that depends on a decision made three sessions ago and it fails or ignores the prior context entirely
4️⃣ You spend time explaining everything again, and that is exactly where the hour goes

Claude Code addresses this differently. It has a project memory file called CLAUDE.md where it writes down your architecture decisions and preferences, and it generally operates with a larger context window. The result is that you open a new session and continue from exactly where you left off without explaining anything from the start. 🧠

🌍 Where the difference shows up in your work

This is not a theoretical gap. It is real time you pay every day:

🗂️ Projects with multiple files: when your project has a backend, a frontend, and a database layer, Codex needs the full briefing again each time you shift between parts
🔄 Accumulated decisions: when you build on older choices like "we agreed to call this API in this specific way," Claude remembers and Codex does not
⏱️ Long sessions: after two hours with Codex, the project starts to feel unfamiliar to it because the early context has drifted out of its window
🔧 Code restructuring: changing the structure of existing code requires a full understanding of the whole codebase, and this is precisely where Claude pulls ahead clearly

🛠️ Tools you actually use

🔧 Claude Code
A tool from Anthropic that runs directly inside your terminal. You give it read and write access to your full project folder, and it maintains project context across multiple sessions through a file called CLAUDE.md.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai/code and sign in with your Anthropic account
2️⃣ Install the tool via terminal by running: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
3️⃣ Open your project folder in the terminal, type claude, and start giving it instructions directly

🔧 ChatGPT Codex
A tool from OpenAI available inside the ChatGPT interface for subscribers. You can connect it to GitHub or paste code directly and ask for edits or new features. It performs well on focused, isolated tasks where no prior context is needed.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to chatgpt.com and confirm your subscription includes Codex access
2️⃣ Select the Codex model from the model switcher at the top of the interface
3️⃣ Upload your files or connect your GitHub repository directly and begin

💡 Try it yourself: test the difference in ten minutes

This experiment shows you the gap directly without any extra explanation required.

1️⃣ Take a small project you have with at least three connected files, or start a new one and tell the tool you have chosen a specific database design approach for the project
2️⃣ Open a session with Codex, ask for a new feature that depends on the decision you mentioned, then close the conversation, open a fresh one, and ask for a second related feature without providing any context
3️⃣ Do the same with Claude Code, but this time ask it upfront to save your decisions in a CLAUDE.md file, then open a new session and request the second feature directly without any briefing
4️⃣ What you will see: with Codex you will need to explain the decision again in the second session. With Claude you will find it picks up exactly where you left off.

What to do next

✅ Run Claude Code on a project with multiple files and pay close attention to how naturally the second session opens without any setup
✅ Look up how context window size varies across different models and why it matters specifically for projects that span weeks
✅ Ask yourself honestly: how many minutes do you spend at the start of each session explaining your project to your AI tool all over again?

The right tool is not the one that writes the prettiest code. It is the one that stays with your project from the first file to the last commit.
