7 Custom Commands That Cut My DayArabic

Arabic

اللي يكتب "omw" ويطلع "On my way!"

📋 /standup

🔍 /review

✍️ /commit

🐛 /debug

📄 /brief

🚀 /release

🗺️ /plan

🔧 Claude Code

🔧 VS Code
2️⃣ اذهب إلى مجلد .claude/commands

7 Custom Commands That Cut My Day
Most Claude users type the same requests over and over. Here is the one change that stops that.

If you have ever opened Claude and typed the same paragraph you typed yesterday, you already know the problem. You are not using the tool badly. You just have not discovered the part that lets you store your instructions permanently. One folder, a few text files, and the repetition ends.

**What it actually is**

A custom slash command is a plain text file you write once and save inside a specific folder in your project. After that, typing /commandname in Claude Code triggers every instruction you wrote in that file, automatically, every time. Think of it like text expansion on your phone. The person who types "omw" and gets "On my way!" is not faster at typing. They stored the output once. You are doing the same thing, but with full AI instructions instead of a phrase.

**How it works**

Claude Code looks for a folder called .claude/commands at the root of your project. Every .md file in that folder becomes a command. The filename is the trigger word, and the file content is what executes when you call it.

1️⃣ Create the folder .claude/commands at the root of your project
2️⃣ Write a file called review.md inside it
3️⃣ In that file, write your full instructions in plain language, as specifically as you like
4️⃣ From now on, type /review in Claude Code and those instructions run instantly

📁 The .claude/commands folder is your personal command library
📝 Each .md file is one independent, self-contained command
⚡ The filename becomes the exact word you type to trigger it
🔗 Commands can read your project files and use them as live context automatically

**The 7 commands worth building**

These seven commands consistently earn their place in daily development work. Each one solves a real problem that repeats.

📋 /standup
File content: "Look at commits from the last 24 hours and write a daily standup report: what was done yesterday, what is planned for today, any blockers." Every morning, one word. One accurate report built from what actually happened.

🔍 /review
File content: "Review current changes using git diff. Look for issues in code quality, security, and performance. Rank findings from most to least critical." Your review criteria are stored, not explained again from scratch every session.

✍️ /commit
File content: "Based on staged changes in git, write a clear commit message in English starting with an imperative verb (Add, Fix, Update, Remove). Add a short description on the second line if the change is complex." No more meaningless commit messages written in a hurry at the end of the day.

🐛 /debug
File content: "Start a structured debugging session. Ask me what error I see, then suggest 3 probable causes ranked by likelihood. Do not give me the answer directly. Explain how to verify each cause." Forces real thinking instead of pasting a fix you do not fully understand.

📄 /brief
File content: "Summarize the thread or document I will paste. Give me: final decisions made, the main reason behind each one, and anything still unresolved. Skip unnecessary detail." This is the command that makes long Slack threads survivable.

🚀 /release
File content: "Based on commits since the last tag, write release notes in this order: new features, fixes, changes that affect users. Write in a tone suited for end users, not for engineers." Release documentation stops being a chore you put off.

🗺️ /plan
File content: "Take the request I give you and turn it into a detailed implementation plan: main tasks, logical order, dependencies, and potential risks. Do not write any code yet." Turns a vague idea into a clear path before a single line is written.

🛠️ Tools you actually use

🔧 Claude Code
This is the environment where custom commands live and run. It operates from your terminal and reads your project files directly without any special configuration.
1️⃣ Install it with: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
2️⃣ Open your project directory in the terminal and type claude to start a session
3️⃣ Create the .claude/commands folder and start adding your commands

🔧 VS Code (or any text editor)
Commands are plain text files. You do not need any special tooling to write or update them at any point.
1️⃣ Open your project in VS Code or whichever editor you use daily
2️⃣ Navigate to .claude/commands inside your project
3️⃣ Create a new .md file and write your instructions in plain, direct language

**Try it yourself: step by step**

Scenario: build the /commit command from scratch and use it on a real project right now.

1️⃣ Open a terminal inside any git project and create the folder: mkdir -p .claude/commands
2️⃣ Create the file: touch .claude/commands/commit.md then open it in your editor
3️⃣ Write exactly this inside the file: "Look at staged changes in git. Write a clear commit message starting with an imperative verb in English. If the changes cover multiple areas, suggest splitting them into separate commits and give me a message for each one."
4️⃣ Run Claude Code by typing claude in your terminal, stage any small change with git add, then type /commit

You will get a precise, professional commit message built from what actually changed, not from what you remember changing.

**What to do next**

✅ Start with one command only. Pick the task you repeat most and turn it into a command today, not this week
✅ Commit your .claude/commands folder to git so your entire team inherits the same library automatically
✅ After one week, count how many times you still typed the same request from scratch instead of calling a command

The engineers who move fastest are not the ones who type faster. They are the ones who stop typing the same thing twice.
