Routine

A scheduled job that sends real content to Claude with precise instructions, takes the response and acts on it.

Trigger

What starts the routine. Either a fixed schedule through cron, or an outside event like an incoming email through a webhook.

Action

What happens after Claude answers: save a file, send an email, update a CRM record or call another tool.

cron

The scheduler built into Mac and Linux. It runs a command at a set time, for example every weekday at 7:45am.

claude -p

Runs Claude without a chat. It takes the instructions and the content, writes the result and exits. This is what makes scheduling possible.

   Prepare the environment and the routines folder

   Traditional automation runs on rigid rules: if X then Y. It breaks at the first edge case. A Claude routine reads natural language, handles edge cases and gets better as your prompt gets better.

   Every routine has three parts: a trigger, a prompt and an action. You start lean. One command and one cron line.

   Install Claude Code, sign in with your account and create a clean folder structure for scripts, logs, outputs and prompts. A tidy setup now saves debugging later.
