🔧 Claude Code
🔧 CLAUDE.md
🔧 Skills Directory
Skill:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/instagram_posts
touch ~/.claude/skills/instagram_posts/SKILL.md
name: instagram_posts

Teach Claude once works forever
You explain your workflow from scratch in every session. One skill file ends that permanently.
Every new Claude session starts the same way. You type out your style, set the context, remind it what you care about. That is not using AI. That is daily retraining. The problem is not Claude. The problem is that Claude, by default, knows nothing about you. There is a way to fix that once and carry it everywhere.
**What it actually is**
A Skill is a plain text file you write once. Claude reads it and follows it automatically every time that Skill activates. Instead of telling Claude each session that you prefer short responses, that you work in a specific domain, or that your audience has particular expectations, you write all of that once in a file and move on.
The shift is subtle but significant. A Skill turns Claude from a general assistant with no memory of you into a tool shaped around your specific workflow. Think of it as a standing brief you hand to a new employee on day one. They absorb it and operate from it without needing reminders.
**How it works**
In environments like Claude Code, Claude reads specific instruction files before you type a single word. The main file is called CLAUDE.md and it holds your general standing context. Skills are one layer above that: structured files you invoke by name for a specific task rather than having them always active across every session.
Here is the exact sequence:
1️⃣ You write a Skill file with a name, a description, and your actual instructions
2️⃣ You save it in the designated folder on your machine inside the skills/ directory
3️⃣ Claude reads the file at session start or when you invoke it by name
4️⃣ Every request you write after that executes according to your instructions
The real difference: instead of Claude understanding your request from the prompt, it understands you as a user. Those are two entirely different things.
**Where you see it**
📝 Content creation: a Skill carries your writing style so you never explain your tone to Claude again
🧑💻 Software development: a Skill holds your language preferences, code standards, and commenting conventions
📊 Reports and analysis: a Skill knows the structure and depth level you always ask for
🔁 Any recurring task: if you do something twice a week, it deserves its own Skill file
**🛠️ Tools you actually use**
🔧 Claude Code
Anthropic's official CLI and IDE integration where Skills and CLAUDE.md operate at full capacity. Run it directly from terminal or connect it to your existing code editor.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai/code and download the version for your operating system
2️⃣ Install it, then open terminal and type the command claude to launch your first session
3️⃣ Navigate to any project folder and Claude will automatically read any CLAUDE.md it finds there
🔧 CLAUDE.md
A plain text file you save inside your project folder or in the global path. Claude reads it automatically at the start of every session in that directory without any prompting from you. This is where your general context and permanent instructions live.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Open terminal and navigate to your project folder
2️⃣ Create the file with: touch CLAUDE.md
3️⃣ Write your instructions in plain language, for example: "Always respond in Arabic first" or "Never use tables in your responses"
🔧 Skills Directory
A dedicated folder at ~/.claude/skills/ where specialized Skills are stored. Each Skill is a structured Markdown file with a clear name and precise instructions, invokable on demand exactly when you need it.
How to get started:
1️⃣ In terminal: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/your_skill_name
2️⃣ Create the Skill file: touch ~/.claude/skills/your_skill_name/SKILL.md
3️⃣ Write your instructions inside the file and save it — the Skill is now ready for any session
**💡 Try it yourself: step by step**
Say you write Instagram content every week and you explain your style to Claude each time. Here is how you build a Skill that eliminates that permanently, starting today:
1️⃣ Open terminal and create the Skill folder:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/instagram_posts
2️⃣ Create the Skill file inside that folder:
touch ~/.claude/skills/instagram_posts/SKILL.md
3️⃣ Open the file in any text editor and write your actual instructions. A working example you can adapt:
name: instagram_posts
description: My personal Instagram post writing style
Always open with a question that creates tension in the first line.
Keep captions under 120 words.
Casual tone, direct voice, no corporate language.
End with exactly three hashtags.
4️⃣ In your next Claude Code session, mention the Skill name or invoke it directly in your request. Claude applies every instruction automatically from that point forward. You type none of it again.
**What to do next**
✅ Identify the one workflow you explain to Claude most often and write that Skill first
✅ Read about CLAUDE.md structure and how to organize context that applies across all your sessions
✅ Ask yourself: what did I explain to Claude more than once this week? That answer is your first Skill to write
Claude is not a chatbot. It is a system. You are the one who builds it.
