Build a weekly competitive intelligence cycle with Claude: collect raw data from competitor sites and news, turn it into analysis, and hand your team a brief they can act on in under ten minutes.
Who this guide is for
Startup founders and small teams who track competitors without a dedicated analyst
Key terms
- Competitive intelligence
- Collecting what your competitors do and turning it into decisions for your own team.
- Signal
- A change that should affect what you do, like a new price or a new hire. Everything else is noise.
- Weekly brief
- A short document your team reads once a week that says what happened and what we do about it.
- cron
- A built in scheduler on macOS and Linux that runs a command at a fixed time, like every Monday at 7 AM.
- claude -p
- Claude Code in print mode. It takes a prompt and input, writes the answer to the terminal and exits, so scripts can call it on your Claude subscription.
The steps
Step 1
Pick your competitors and sources
The problem at most startups is not missing information. It is that collecting it eats team time and never turns into a decision. A founder sees a competitor post, saves it somewhere, and nobody reads it a week later.
A working system has three pillars: defined sources checked on a schedule, processing that turns raw data into analysis, and one format the whole team reads fast. Claude handles the second and third. Your job is the first.
Keep it small. Ten to fifteen sources and five direct competitors at most. Good sources: pricing pages, blogs and changelogs, LinkedIn company pages and executive profiles, Crunchbase and TechCrunch, App Store and Google Play listings, and the Reddit threads or communities in your category.
Run the commands below to create the workspace and the competitors file. Add one block per competitor with its homepage, pricing page, blog, handle and Crunchbase link.
PromptTerminal: create the workspacemkdir -p ~/ci-system/{competitors,raw-data,analyses,briefs,scripts,logs} cat > ~/ci-system/competitors.json << 'EOF' { "competitors": [ { "name": "[CompetitorA]", "homepage": "https://[competitora.com]", "pricing": "https://[competitora.com]/pricing", "blog": "https://[competitora.com]/blog", "twitter": "@[competitora]", "crunchbase": "https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/[competitor-a]" } ] } EOF ls -la ~/ci-system/Tip: Use one word names with no spaces in competitors.json, because the scripts split each line on spaces.
