Three words stop Claude over-buildingArabic

🔧 Claude.ai Projects
Make minimal changes only. Do not add files, features, or reorganize code beyond what is explicitly requested."

🔧 Claude API
2️⃣ في حقل "system"، أضف: "Make minimal changes only. Stick strictly to what is requested and nothing beyond."

Three Words That Stop Claude Over-Building
A small instruction that keeps Claude focused and gives you cleaner results fast.

You give Claude a small task and come back to find new files, functions you never asked for, and code three times longer than it needed to be. This is not a bug. Claude is trained to be maximally helpful, which means it assumes you want the most complete version of whatever you asked. Most of the time, you want less.

What it actually is

When Claude reads a request, it does not just solve what you typed. It thinks about context, anticipates what you might need next, and adds. The new utility function that "makes sense here," the refactored adjacent code because it was "cleaner that way," the extra error handling, the brand new helpers file. You asked for one thing. You got five.

Ask Claude to "add email validation to the signup form" and it will validate the email, reorganize neighboring functions, add error messages in a new style, and possibly generate a utilities file you never requested. That is not failure. That is Claude doing exactly what it was trained to do. The problem is that it does this when you did not ask.

⚙️ How it works and how to stop it

Claude treats "helpful" as equivalent to "complete." This serves you well when you want explanations or analysis. When you are working with code, complete is not always better. It is often just harder to review, harder to understand, and harder to merge cleanly.

The fix is three words: minimal changes only

Add this phrase at the start of any technical request. When Claude reads it, it constrains itself to exactly what you specified with nothing beyond, no unsolicited improvements, no surprise additions.

Here is how to apply it:

1️⃣ Write your request exactly as you normally would, no rewording needed
2️⃣ Prefix the message with "minimal changes only:" directly before your ask
3️⃣ Send it and check the diff — you will see the difference immediately

The contrast is concrete. Without the phrase: "add email validation to the signup form" returns reorganized code with extras. With it: "minimal changes only: add email validation to the signup form" returns a targeted change in one file, on the relevant lines, nothing else touched.

🌍 Where you need this most

🐛 When fixing a specific bug and you do not want Claude cleaning up surrounding code in the same pass
➕ When adding a small feature and you cannot afford new files appearing without a review
🔍 When you need to read and understand the diff quickly after the change
⚠️ When working on a sensitive codebase where any change outside the requested scope creates real downstream problems

🛠️ Tools you actually use

This phrase works everywhere Claude runs. Here is how to make it permanent across the most common setups so you never have to type it again:

🔧 Claude.ai Projects
Claude.ai Projects let you write a persistent system prompt that applies to every conversation inside the project automatically.
How to set it up:
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai and open an existing Project or create a new one
2️⃣ Click "Project instructions" or "Edit project details" depending on your interface version
3️⃣ Add this line anywhere in the instructions: "Make minimal changes only. Do not add features, files, or reorganize code beyond what is explicitly requested."

🔧 Claude API
If you call Claude via the API directly, you control the system prompt completely and can inject the constraint once at the session level.
How to set it up:
1️⃣ Open your API call configuration wherever you manage it
2️⃣ In the "system" field, add: "Make minimal changes only. Stick strictly to what is requested and nothing beyond."
3️⃣ The constraint applies to every message in that session without repeating it each time

💡 Try it yourself: step by step

Run this experiment with any small code change you have been meaning to make:

1️⃣ Open claude.ai and start a completely fresh conversation
2️⃣ Type a straightforward technical request and include the relevant code, for example: "In this function, convert the string to lowercase before the comparison"
3️⃣ Note what comes back: how many lines changed, what else did Claude touch that you did not mention
4️⃣ Open a second fresh conversation and type the exact same request, but prefix it with "minimal changes only:" before your instruction
5️⃣ Compare the two outputs — look specifically at what changed beyond the one thing you asked for

What you will see: the second response is narrower, cleaner, and covers exactly what you asked. The diff is readable in thirty seconds instead of five minutes.

What to do next

✅ Use "minimal changes only:" as the opening of your next precise technical request and see the difference firsthand
✅ If you use Claude.ai Projects or the API, add the constraint to your system prompt once so it applies everywhere without repeating it
✅ Before each Claude request, ask yourself: do I want thorough or targeted? Let your honest answer shape how you write the prompt

Claude does not know where to stop unless you tell it where the boundary is.
