Key terms
- Plugin
- A ready package that adds skills, agents, hooks and MCP servers to Claude Code. Install it once and it works with you.
- Marketplace
- A catalog of plugins. Claude Code has to know it before you can install from it. It can be a GitHub repo, a git URL or a folder on your machine.
- Scope
- Who gets the plugin: you in every project, everyone who works in this repository, or you in this repository only.
- Hook
- A command that runs automatically on a certain Claude Code event. Any plugin can add hooks, which is why you review it before installing.
The steps
Step 1
Check your Claude Code version
Installing from the shell with the new flag needs version 2.1.292 or later. Open your terminal and run the command below. If the version is older, update first.
Inside a session, 2.1.275 or later is enough.
