حوّل أي كتاب أو ملف طويل إلى skill في Claude Code بأمر واحدTurn Any Book or Long Document into a Claude Code Skill with One Command
Turn a book or a folder of documents into a structured skill, so Claude opens only the chapter you need instead of rereading the whole book on every question.
Who this guide is for
Anyone using Claude Code who keeps going back to the same books or documents
Key terms
- Skill
- A folder with a SKILL.md file and supporting files. Claude reads the summary first and opens the other files only when it needs them.
- Token
- The unit a model uses to measure text. A 400 page book is roughly 200K tokens.
- book-to-skill
- A free, open source (MIT) converter that turns a book or documents into a skill for any host that supports the Agent Skills standard, including Claude Code.
- OCR
- Turning page images into text. You need it only when a PDF is a scan with no text layer.
The steps
Step 1
Pick a file you own
Choose a book you bought, your work documents, or anything you reopen often. It accepts PDF, EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, HTML, RTF and MOBI, plus whole folders or several files at once.
If your PDF is a scan, there is no text to extract. Run OCR first.
OCRmyPDF adds a text layer to scanned PDFs, and the install steps are on the same siteSource: ocrmypdf.readthedocs.io PromptOCR a scanned PDFocrmypdf [input.pdf] [output.pdf]
Tip: Only use books you own or documents you have the right to use.
Step 2
Install book-to-skill
Open your terminal and run the command below. It installs the converter as a skill and gives you the /book-to-skill command inside Claude Code.
You can also clone the repo into your skills folder by hand.
PromptInstallnpx skills add virgiliojr94/book-to-skill
Tip: If the command does not show up, start a new Claude Code session.
Step 3
Check your extractors
Each format is read by a different tool. This command lists what is installed and prints the exact command for anything missing.
For technical books with tables and code, the converter asks you and picks the mode that keeps tables intact.
PromptCheck setuppython3 scripts/extract.py --check
Step 4
Convert the book
Inside Claude Code, run the command with the file path. You can add a skill name at the end.
You convert once. You get SKILL.md with the core ideas and a chapter index, a chapters folder with one file per chapter, glossary.md, patterns.md and cheatsheet.md.
PromptConvert/book-to-skill [./my-book.pdf] [my-book]
Step 5
Ask the skill
Call the skill by name, then your topic or question. Claude reads the summary and opens only the matching chapter.
By the developer's measurements that is about 5K tokens per question, 24 to 51 times fewer than dumping the whole book into the chat.
PromptAsk/[my-book] [topic or question]
Tip: Ask it which chapters it has to see the index.
Step 6
Fold in new files
Got a new paper or an updated document? Run the same command with the path of the existing skill and it merges the new material instead of starting over.
PromptFold in/book-to-skill [./new-file.pdf] [~/.claude/skills/my-book]
Step 7
Keep the skill private
After converting, the tool offers to publish the skill to GitHub, and it defaults to private. Keep it private for any book that is not yours.
Your own internal docs and brand guide can be shared with your team within your company's rules.
Ready prompts to copy
/book-to-skill [./company-docs/] [company-knowledge]
/book-to-skill [./brand-guidelines.pdf] [brand-book]
The takeaway
Stop pasting the whole book every time. Convert it once and let Claude open only the chapter you need.
