Most people try Claude or ChatGPT for a week and quit. The tool is not the problem. Fix four faults on day one: it does not know you, it writes like a robot, you copy and paste everything into it, and it is stuck in a browser tab.

Who this guide is for

Anyone starting with Claude or ChatGPT who wants answers that know them, not generic replies

Key terms

Project
A space with files and standing instructions, in both Claude and ChatGPT. Every chat you start inside it reads those files from the first message.
Connectors and Plugins
Links between the tool and your email, calendar, Notion and more, so it can read and work in them with your permission. Claude calls them Connectors, ChatGPT calls them Plugins.
Writing style
A ChatGPT Work feature that learns how you write from your connected emails and files.
Skill
A file of instructions Claude goes back to whenever a task needs it, like a description of how you write. Claude's old styles have become skills.
Desktop app
Claude or ChatGPT for Mac or Windows. It reaches your files and tools more easily than the browser.

The steps

  1. Step 1

Fault one: it does not know you. Let it interview you

A new hire asks before they work. Open a new chat in Claude or ChatGPT, paste the prompt below and answer honestly.

The clearer your answers, the sharper every reply after this. Answer by voice if that is easier.

    PromptInterview prompt
Get to know me like a new hire on day one. Ask me one question at a time about: who I am, my daily work, my goals this month, the tools I use, how I talk, and what I dislike in replies. Do not suggest anything until you are done. After the last question say: ready to write the two files.
  2. Step 2

    Have it write two files

After the interview, ask for two files: one about you, one about your work. Read them and fix anything wrong before you save them.

Save them on your computer as text or Markdown files. You will add them in the next step.

    PromptTwo files prompt
From my answers, write two Markdown files:
    1. about-me.md: who I am, how I talk, what I like and dislike in replies.
    2. about-my-work.md: my work, [my clients or audience], the tools I use, my current goals, and the tasks that repeat every week.
Keep each file short and clear. Bullet points only, no intro.
  3. Step 3

Put both files in a Project

In Claude: open Projects, create one named after your work and upload both files to the Project knowledge.

In ChatGPT: same idea. Create a Project, upload both files and paste the instructions below into the Project instructions.

Now every chat you start in the Project already knows you, without explaining yourself again.

    PromptProject instructions
Read about-me.md and about-my-work.md before every reply. Write in my style. If my request is missing something, ask me one question before you start.

Tip: Update the two files whenever your work changes, like any new hire's onboarding doc.

  4. Step 4

Fault two: it writes like a robot. Teach it your voice

First, pull a description of your voice out of your own writing with the prompt below. Paste three or four messages or posts you wrote yourself.

In Claude: styles have become skills. Ask Claude to turn the description into a Skill with a name you like, turn it on in Customize, then Skills, and call it with a slash command in the chat. If you had an old custom style, Claude converts it into a skill for you and you find it there switched off, just turn it on. Even simpler: put the description in the Project instructions.

In ChatGPT: if your plan includes ChatGPT Work, turn on Settings, then Personalization, then Writing style, and it learns from the email and files you connected. If not, paste the description into the Project instructions.

    PromptWrite like me prompt
Here are [3 or 4] samples of my writing: [paste the samples]. Analyze my style and write a short description I can give any AI: sentence length, words I repeat, how I open and how I close, my dialect, and the things I never write. Then write a test paragraph about [topic] in the same style so I can check it.

Tip: Writing style in ChatGPT is only on paid ChatGPT Work plans for now.

  5. Step 5

Fault three: you copy and paste everything. Connect your tools

In Claude: go to Customize, then Connectors, and connect the tools you use every day, like email, calendar and Notion. Each one asks you to sign in and approve.

In ChatGPT: open chatgpt.com/plugins, pick a tool and connect your account, then type @ in the message box and choose it. What you can connect depends on your plan.

Start with one tool, the one you open every day, and try it before you add more.

Tip: The tool works in your accounts with your permissions, so connect only what you need.

  6. Step 6

Fault four: it is stuck in a browser tab. Install the app

Open the official download page, get the Mac or Windows app and sign in with the same account. ChatGPT has a desktop app too.

The app is more than another browser window. It lets Claude reach the files on your computer and your tools more easily, which is what lets it do the work instead of just answering.

Tip: Download it from the official site only.

  7. Step 7

Test it on a real first task

Now test your new hire. Open a chat inside the Project and ask for a task you do every week.

If the reply misses, say why and ask it to update about-me.md with the note.

    PromptFirst task
Using my files, write [a task I repeat every week, like a reply to a client email or a meeting summary] in my style. When you are done, tell me which piece of information would have made the reply better.

Ready prompts to copy

PromptMonthly file review
Read about-me.md and about-my-work.md and tell me what is out of date or missing. Ask me about each one, one question at a time.

The takeaway

None of the four is a magic prompt. Each is a one time setup, and everyone has the same tool. The difference is what you give it.
