Filee

A free, open source file converter that runs on your computer. Hold a key, drag the file and drop it on the format you want.

Open source

The code is public on GitHub. Anyone can read it and check what the app does with your files.

The donut

The ring of formats that opens at your cursor when you drag a file with Ctrl held. It only shows formats that fit your file.

Engine

Helper programs such as FFmpeg or LibreOffice. Filee downloads one only when a format needs it.

The steps

   Download Filee from the official source

   Open filee.sh or the Releases page on GitHub and download the build for your computer.

   On Windows 10 or 11, run the Setup file. It adds the right click menu and the filee command. Want no install? Unzip the Portable build and run Filee.exe.

   

   Tip: Only download from filee.sh or the official GitHub page, never from mirror sites.

   On Mac or Linux, know it is a preview

   The macOS build needs macOS 14 or newer, and the Linux build needs Ubuntu 22.04 or newer. Both are still previews.

   On a Mac, unpack the package and run install.sh. The build is not notarized yet, so the first start is blocked: go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.

   On Linux, drag gestures need X11. On Wayland, use the drop zone or the right click menu.

   Step 3

   Hold Ctrl, drag the file and drop it on a format

   Hold Ctrl (Option on a Mac) and drag any file. The ring of formats opens at your cursor, showing only the formats that fit.

   Drop the file on a format and the new file is saved next to the original. No upload, no account, and it works offline.

   

   Tip: Try your first conversion on a copy, not on your only original.

   Convert many files at once

   Select several files and drag them together. Filee converts them in parallel.

   You can drag a picture or a file link out of Chrome or Safari the same way. Filee downloads it and converts it.

   When a conversion needs several steps, such as HWP to DOCX, Filee finds the route on its own.

   Arrange the formats and settings you use

   From the home screen, open the toolbar editor. Each file type has its own ring of formats, arranged by drag and drop.

   Save presets for quality, size, PDF pages, compression and the output folder.

   Use the filee command for repeat work

   Setup or install.sh adds the filee command to your terminal. It uses the same engines and presets as the app.

   Convert a whole folder in one line, or have a folder watched so every new file is converted on its own.

   Know when you need an extra engine

   Most formats work out of the box, without Office or LibreOffice.

   Some need an optional engine: video and audio need FFmpeg, and some older document formats need LibreOffice. Filee downloads the engine only when you need it.
