Key terms

API version

The value of the anthropic-version header. It decides which request and response shapes are accepted. The new version is 2026-10-21. The old one is 2023-06-01.

Breaking change

A change that makes a request that worked yesterday fail today. Here the failure is a 400 error.

Sampling parameters

The temperature, top_p and top_k settings that control how random a reply is. In the new version they are removed.

SDK

The official library that talks to the API for you. Its new major versions send the new API version automatically.

   Scan your code before you upgrade

   Find what is affected first. The upgrade itself is easy, but three things in your requests return a 400 in the new version.

   One: any use of temperature, top_p or top_k, even at the default value. Two: a document block placed directly inside an assistant message. Three: a text block inside a user message that carries a non empty citations array.

   Give Claude Code your project and let it search.
