After this guide you can have Claude Code switch off the ads and bloat on your Android TV or Google TV and install a clean home screen, with a backup and a one line restore.
Who this guide is for
Anyone with an Android TV or Google TV and a computer on the same Wi-Fi.
Key terms
- CleanYourTV
- A free, open source GitHub project with a prompt and ready tools so an agent can switch off a TV's ads and install a new home screen.
- Developer options
- A hidden Android settings menu. It appears after you press Build seven times, and it is where you turn on debugging.
- ADB
- The way a computer talks to an Android device. Claude Code uses it to send commands to the TV over Wi-Fi.
- Launcher
- The home screen you see when the TV turns on. The project installs a clean one in place of the ad filled one.
The steps
Step 1
Check your TV is supported
The project works on any Android TV or Google TV set, such as TCL, Sony, Xiaomi, Philips and Hisense.
On Fire TV only the cleanup works, because Fire OS will not hand Home to another launcher. Samsung and LG run different systems and are not supported.
Tip: Note your TV's model from Settings then About. The prompt needs it.
Step 2
Turn on Developer options on the TV
Go to Settings, Device Preferences, About. Press OK on Build seven times until it says you are a developer.
Go back, open Developer options and turn on USB debugging. If you see Network debugging or ADB debugging, turn that on too. Keep the TV on.
Tip: Some boxes cut power to their USB port while debugging is on, so do it all in one sitting.
Step 3
Set up the computer and clone the project
Your computer must be on the same Wi-Fi as the TV, with Claude Code installed.
Clone the project and open its folder in Claude Code. Cloning matters: the agent reuses the project's tools, which hold the backup and the restore.

Step 4
Paste the prompt and add your model
Open PROMPT.md in the project, copy all of it and paste it into Claude Code. Change the model line to your TV's model.
The first two lines look like this:
PromptStart of PROMPT.mdI want to debloat my Android TV and replace its launcher with a clean Apple TV style home screen. My TV model is: [your TV model]. Work on the real device, step by step, and verify everything you do with screenshots pulled from the TV. Ask me before anything that depends on my preferences.
Step 5
Allow it on the TV and answer the checklist
Claude Code finds the TV on your network. When Allow USB debugging appears on the screen, press Allow.
Then it asks which apps you use, the dock size and order, and whether to keep the voice assistant, Chromecast and updates. Answer honestly: it only switches off what you did not pick.
Step 6
Let it run and watch the screenshots
The agent backs up first, then switches off the ads and extra apps in small batches and installs the new home screen. After each step it pulls a screenshot from the TV to check.
The project says it takes about fifteen minutes.
Tip: Live TV, HDMI and some streaming apps give black screenshots. That is normal, not damage.
Step 7
Close debugging when you are done
Turn USB debugging and Network debugging off, revoke the authorisations in Developer options, and restart the TV.
The ADB port is not encrypted, so do not leave it open.
Step 8
If you want everything back
Nothing is uninstalled, only switched off. The project's restore command puts the TV back as it was, and the TV's own app settings can switch any app back on.
If a firmware update brings the ads back, run the tool again.
PromptRestoreTV_HOST=[TV IP] tools/restore.sh examples/[your model folder]/debloat.txt
Tip: Changing a TV's software is at your own risk and may affect its warranty.
Ready prompts to copy
Before you switch off any app, show me a list of everything you plan to switch off, with one word on what each does. Do not switch anything off until I agree.
The takeaway
Your TV is yours, and the ads are not part of it. One prompt, fifteen minutes, and you can undo it any time.
