A simple way to measure any AI tool on your own work, not on the demo. One week, one real task, five questions, and a score that tells you to keep the subscription or cancel it.
Who this guide is for
Anyone paying for AI subscriptions or thinking about a new tool
Key terms
- The promise
- What the tool says about itself in the launch, the ad and the demo.
- The reality
- What the tool actually does when you give it a task from your own work, with your own files.
- Test task
- A real job you repeat every week and know the right result for, so you can judge the tool fast.
- Fix time
- The minutes you spend correcting the tool's output. This number matters more than the tool's speed.
The steps
Step 1
Pick a task from your own work
Don't test the tool on the examples on its page. Those were picked to look good.
Pick a job you do every week and know the right result for: sorting invoices, replying to customer emails, summarising a meeting, a short reel. Write it down in two lines before you open the tool.
PromptWrite the test taskHelp me write a test task for [tool name]. My work: [one line]. The task I repeat every week: [task]. Write: the inputs I will give it, exactly what the right result looks like, and three signs that tell me the result is weak.
Tip: A task you already know the answer to beats a new one, because you can judge it fast.
Step 2
Run it on two tools with the same request
The exact same request, with the same files, on the tool you use now and the new one.
For each, note how many minutes it took and how many times you rewrote the request or fixed the result. Don't judge on the first reply alone.
Step 3
Answer the five questions
After the trial, answer honestly:
Does it do my task, not the demo task?
How many times did I fix its work?
Do I get the same quality if I repeat the request?
Where do my files go, and am I fine with that?
What does it really cost per month, with any credits or usage limits?
PromptRate the trialHere is [tool name]'s result on my task: [paste result]. Here is what the right result looks like: [description]. Rate it honestly: what is missing, what is wrong, and how long would I spend fixing it? Don't flatter me.
Step 4
Repeat the same request three times
A tool that is great once and weak twice is not a tool you can rely on.
Give it the same request three times on different days and compare. Consistency beats the best single result.
Step 5
Set the score yourself
Out of five for each: finished the task, no fixing needed, same quality every time, worth the price.
The score is yours, for your work. Tool ratings you see in posts are one person's test on their own work. Take them as an idea, not a verdict.
PromptScore sheetMake me a simple table to rate [number] AI tools. Columns: tool, monthly price, finished the task (out of 5), fix time in minutes, consistency (out of 5), worth the price (yes or no), note. End with one line on which tool to keep and why.
Step 6
Review your subscriptions every month
Set a reminder for the first of every month. Open your subscription list and cancel any tool you didn't use on a real task that month.
You can come back to it when you have a task that needs it.
Tip: Ask yourself: if this tool vanished today, would my work stop, or would I not notice?
Ready prompts to copy
I'm thinking of subscribing to [tool name] at [price]. My work: [description]. Give me five questions I must answer before I pay, and one test task to try during the trial week.
The takeaway
The tool worth paying for isn't the one that impresses you in the demo. It's the one that finishes your work, every time.
