Who this guide is for
Anyone using Claude Code who wants better results on hard tasks and less cost and waiting on easy ones.
Key terms
- Effort
- A setting for how much the model thinks before it answers. Levels are low, medium, high, xhigh and max. Higher levels mean more thinking and more time.
- ultrathink
- A word you type inside your message. Claude thinks harder on that one message only. Your session effort setting stays the same.
- Default level
- The default is high on most models. On Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 the default is medium.
The steps
Step 1
Check your current level and open the slider
Type /effort with nothing after it. A slider opens and shows the current level for the model you are using.
Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 offer low, medium, high, xhigh and max. Older models such as Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 have no xhigh. If you pick an unsupported level, Claude Code uses the highest supported level below it.
Tip: Press Enter in the slider to save the level as your default. Press s to apply it to this session only.
