الإشراف في Instagram لأولياء الأمور: فعّله خطوة بخطوة واعرف اللي تشوفه واللي ما تشوفهInstagram Supervision for Parents: Set It Up Step by Step and Know What You See and What You Don't

After this guide you can turn on Instagram Supervision for your teen, set a daily limit and sleep mode, and know exactly what you see and what stays private.

Who this guide is for

Parents in the UAE and the Gulf whose kids aged 13 to 17 use Instagram.

Key terms

Supervision
Instagram's official set of parent tools. It only starts when both the parent and the teen agree.
Teen Account
An account for ages 13 to 17 that comes with stronger protective settings from day one.
Family Center
Where you see the accounts you supervise and change their settings.
Sleep mode
Set hours when Instagram notifications are muted and your teen sees a reminder to close the app, or is blocked if you choose that.

The steps

  1. Step 1

    Check the requirements first

Supervision is for teens aged 13 to 17, and the parent must be over 18. Each teen can have one supervising parent.

Update Instagram on both phones to the latest version, since supervision needs it. You can also use instagram.com in a browser instead of the app.

To send the invite inside Instagram you must follow your teen. They don't need to follow you back.

Tip: If either of you has blocked the other, the invite won't work. Unblock first.

  2. Step 2

    Send the supervision invite

Go to your profile, tap the menu (three lines) at the top.

Below For families, tap Supervision, then Create invite. Review the screen and tap Continue.

Choose Find your teen on Instagram, or Send your teen a link and share it on WhatsApp or any app.

These labels come from Instagram's English help page. If your app is in Arabic the wording may differ a little, but the place is the same: profile, menu, family section, supervision.

Tip: Invites expire after 7 days. If it expired, create a new one the same way.

  3. Step 3

Sit with them and let them accept

Supervision only starts after your teen accepts. That's by design: it's an agreement.

Before they tap, explain what you will see and what you will never see, which is the content of their messages.

Your teen can also send you the invite from their account and you accept it. Same result.

PromptPrepare the talk before the invite
I'm a parent and my [son / daughter] is [age] and uses Instagram. I want to turn on Instagram Supervision with their agreement. Help me prepare a short, calm talk: why I want this, what I will see (time spent, daily limit, sleep mode, accounts they chat with) and what I won't see (message content). Keep it simple, no scare tactics, and include a question asking their view on the daily limit.
  4. Step 4

See time spent and set a daily limit

Once accepted, go to your profile, open the menu, and in Settings and activity tap Supervision for Teen Accounts. You'll see the accounts you supervise.

Tap your teen's account, then Time management. You'll see their time on Instagram over the last 7 days across all devices, with a daily average.

Under Daily limit pick the time you agreed on and tap Save. Then choose Remind teen to close Instagram, or Block teen from Instagram.

Teen Accounts already get a reminder after 60 minutes a day. When the limit runs out, your teen can ask you for more time and you get a notification.

Tip: Start with the reminder, not the block, and see how the first week goes.

  5. Step 5

    Set sleep mode

In the same Time management screen, under Sleep mode choose the days and hours.

During sleep mode notifications are muted and auto replies are on for messages. You choose a reminder or a full block.

Teen Accounts start with sleep mode from 10 PM to 7 AM every day, and you can adjust it.

Tip: Make school nights a bit stricter than the weekend, and agree on it first.

  6. Step 6

See who they chat with, not the messages

In Family Center tap your teen's account, then Who they have chats with.

You see the accounts they chatted with in the last 7 days, including replies and reactions to stories or notes, and tags. You never see the message content.

If they delete a chat, that account won't be listed. Message requests they never answered won't show either.

Tip: Instagram says this feature isn't available everywhere. If you can't find it, that's why.

  7. Step 7

See the topics shaping their feed

In May 2026 Meta added a new supervision feature: you can see the general topics your teen engages with, in other words what shapes what they see, and tap a topic for more detail.

Meta's announcement says it's available globally in English. If you don't see it in Arabic, try switching the app language to English.

Tip: Use topics to open a conversation, not to accuse.

  8. Step 8

Know what Teen Accounts already protect

Even without supervision, Teen Accounts start stronger: new accounts for 13 to 17 are private, and messages only come from people they follow or have already connected with.

The content setting is Ages 13+, so Instagram tries to hide content not suitable under 18. Potentially offensive comments and message requests are hidden automatically.

Teens under 16 need your permission to loosen these settings. With supervision, any request to loosen them comes to you to approve or decline.

Tip: If your 16 or 17 year old has an older public account, it doesn't switch to private by itself. Review it together.

  9. Step 9

The tool helps, the talk matters more

No tool replaces an honest conversation. Teach them to protect their information, skip strange links, and come to you when something bothers them.

Review supervision together every few months instead of setting it and forgetting it.

    PromptA simple family agreement
Help me write a short family agreement for Instagram between me and my [son / daughter], age [age]. Include: the daily limit we agreed on [time], sleep hours [hours], what to do if a strange link or message arrives, and when we review the agreement together. Keep it to a few points, in words a teenager understands, with no threats.

Ready prompts to copy

PromptIf your teen gets a strange message
My teen is [age] and got an Instagram message from an account they don't know that says [describe the message without personal details]. Help me understand whether this looks like a scam or a suspicious link, and the calm steps we can take together inside Instagram (block, report, restrict).

The takeaway

Supervision gives you time, sleep hours and who they chat with, with their agreement and without reading their messages. The rest is an honest talk.
