Canva app in ChatGPT

Canva's official link that lets ChatGPT create, edit and open designs in your Canva account. It runs through the Canva AI Connector.

Magic Layers

A Canva feature that takes a flat image and splits it into layers: text becomes live text, and each object becomes a piece you can move on its own.

Flat image

An image where everything is merged into one layer. Any edit means the model redraws it, so things you did not ask for can change.

The steps

   Understand why the image breaks when you edit it

   The image ChatGPT gives you is a flat file. Text, background and objects are one layer.

   When you ask to change one word, the model redraws the image, so the font, colors or layout can shift. Canva itself calls the flat file the point where work stops once you need to change a tagline or pull out an element.

   The fix is not more edits. The fix is splitting the image into layers.

   Tip: If you like the image on the first try, stop asking for edits and move it to Canva.

   Connect your Canva account in ChatGPT

   Open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Plugins.

   Pick Canva, select Install plugin or Connect if shown, sign in with the Canva account you want designs saved to, and approve the permissions.

   Per Canva's help page, the connection works for every Canva account, including Free. Some actions, like Brand Templates, need a paid plan.

   You can also type @Canva in any chat and ChatGPT will ask you to connect if you have not yet.

   

   Tip: On ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, your admin must enable Apps & Connectors before you can connect Canva.

   Generate your image in ChatGPT

   Describe the image you want in a normal chat. Set the size and the exact text up front, because clear text splits into layers more cleanly later.

   Keep the text short and bold, and avoid piling objects on top of each other.

   Design a [post type: Instagram post / ad / poster] at [1080x1350] about [topic]. Put the headline "[headline]" in bold, clear type, with a small line under it: "[second line]". Keep the background simple and the objects clearly separated.

   Ask Canva to turn it into a layered design

   In the same chat, right under the image, tell Canva you want it as an editable design. Type @Canva or pick it from the + button in the message box.

   Canva runs Magic Layers on the image and shows a preview of the design in the chat.

   Open the design from the preview in the chat

   Select the preview in the chat and choose Open in Canva or Save.

   Canva's help page warns that ChatGPT sometimes writes links that look like Canva links but do not point to a real design. If that happens, ignore the typed link and open from the preview, or find the design in your Canva projects.

   Only the designs you select in the chat are saved to your account.

   Tip: Cannot find the design in Canva? Go back to the chat and select Open in Canva on the preview.

   Edit each element on its own in Canva

   The design is now layers. Click the text and change it like any Canva text. Drag any object somewhere else, resize it, or delete it.

   You can also switch fonts and colors to your brand, or resize it for a story or another post without starting over.

   Check before you publish

   Magic Layers reads the image and rebuilds it, but it can misread a letter or split an object badly, especially in complex or photo realistic images.

   Before you post, read every line of text letter by letter, check the elements sit where they should, and fix anything by hand in Canva.

   When you are done and no longer need the link, disconnect Canva from Settings, then Plugins.

   Tip: Arabic text especially: check it twice before you publish.
