🧠 brainstorming
🔍 systematic-debugging
✅ tdd-workflow
🔧 mcp-builder
🌐 deep-research
📋 writing-plans
🔧 Claude Code
Team
🔧 Superpowers Skills Library

6 Claude Skills Out Of 100 Tested
Most skills look impressive in demos and collapse the moment you use them on real work.
If you have ever activated a Claude skill, watched it run, and thought "this is exactly what Claude does anyway without it" — that reaction is telling you something true. The skills ecosystem for Claude Code is enormous, with hundreds of options that promise to improve how you build. Most of them do not. After testing over a hundred skills across real workflows, the same pattern kept appearing: the ones that actually work all share one quality that has nothing to do with how they are marketed.
What it actually is
Claude skills are structured instructions that change how Claude approaches an entire task, not just the tone or format of its response. Think of the difference between asking a consultant a quick question and hiring one who runs a formal audit process before answering anything. Both professionals say similar kinds of things in the end, but the structured process produces a fundamentally different quality of output. Most skills are the equivalent of telling the consultant to speak with more confidence. The six that work are the ones that introduce an actual process Claude did not have before.
How it works
Each skill activates by typing a slash command in Claude Code, like /brainstorming or /systematic-debugging. When a skill loads, it gives Claude a strict operational framework to follow for that session. The critical difference between a skill that works and one that wastes your time comes down to a single question: does this skill enforce steps that Claude would otherwise skip entirely?
The six that cleared that bar:
🧠 brainstorming
Stops Claude from jumping to implementation and forces structured exploration of the actual problem first. This one habit eliminates a large category of bugs that come from solving the wrong problem at speed.
🔍 systematic-debugging
Replaces random guessing with a rigorous hypothesis-driven investigation. Wait, no hyphens — replaces guessing with an investigation built around hypotheses. Claude must state a hypothesis, confirm or eliminate it, and only then move forward. The time saved here is real and measurable.
✅ tdd-workflow
Enforces writing tests before writing code with no way to skip the order. The benefit extends beyond test coverage. It forces you to define the exact behavior you want before you build anything, which turns out to be a completely different mode of thinking.
🔧 mcp-builder
The only skill on this list that produces a real artifact you can actually use. It guides Claude through building an MCP server — Model Context Protocol — that extends Claude's capabilities and connects it to external systems. This one opens up a different category of possibilities entirely.
🌐 deep-research
Gives Claude structured access to the internet with multi-source gathering and full source attribution. The gap between this and a regular question is the gap between what Claude already knows and what it finds right now.
📋 writing-plans
Prevents Claude from starting implementation until a complete plan exists and you have approved it. On any project larger than a few files, this skill alone saves significant rework time.
Where you see it
These six are not theoretical. They show up across different kinds of real work.
💼 Engineering teams use tdd-workflow and systematic-debugging to catch problems before they reach production
🧩 Product managers use brainstorming before every new feature to confirm they are actually solving the right problem
🔗 Architects use mcp-builder to connect Claude to internal databases and proprietary systems
📊 Research teams use deep-research to run competitive analysis and market scans with traceable, verifiable sources
🛠️ Tools you actually use
🔧 Claude Code
This is the environment where all skills run. Without it, none of the six skills described above will function.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Visit claude.ai and subscribe to a Pro or Team plan
2️⃣ Download Claude Code from code.anthropic.com
3️⃣ Run the command claude in your terminal and connect your account to confirm the setup
🔧 Superpowers Skills Library
This is the main community library of skills for Claude Code. It contains hundreds of skills, but the six described in this guide are the right place to start before exploring anything else.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Once Claude Code is installed, open your project folder in the terminal
2️⃣ Type /brainstorming or /systematic-debugging directly into the chat interface
3️⃣ The skill activates automatically and redirects Claude's entire approach for the remainder of that session
💡 Try it yourself: step by step
This scenario works for anyone who has a project they are about to start, whether it is a software build, a product, or a service.
1️⃣ Open Claude Code inside your new project folder or any empty folder on your machine
2️⃣ Type exactly /brainstorming and press Enter, then wait for the confirmation message that the skill has loaded
3️⃣ Describe your idea in one or two sentences only, for example: "I want to build a tool that helps small teams track their daily tasks without switching between five different apps"
4️⃣ Claude will not launch into immediate output. Instead it will ask you structured questions: Who is the real user? What is the core frustration? Are there simpler existing alternatives? By the end of that session you have genuine clarity before writing a single line of code
What to do next
✅ Install Claude Code and run /systematic-debugging on an actual bug you have open right now — notice how the process differs from a normal conversation
✅ Before your next project, use /brainstorming and track how much your initial assumptions shift by the end of the session
✅ For every skill you consider adding, ask yourself one question: does this enforce a new process, or does it only rephrase what Claude already does?
The six skills that actually work do not make Claude smarter — they make your use of it more disciplined.
