🔧 Claude.ai Custom Instructions
Settings
🔧 Anthropic API System Prompt
Respond in bullet points only. No preamble. No closing remarks."
Custom Instructions
Be concise. Answer directly without preamble, summary, or closing remarks. If I ask for code, give only the code unless I ask for explanation."

Output Styles Change How Claude Talks
You can stop reading walls of text you never asked for.
Claude defaults to being thorough. Ask it a simple question and you get a preamble, the answer itself, a summary, a couple of caveats, and a closing sentence wishing you well. That thoroughness has its place, but when you want a quick answer or just the code, all that scaffolding gets in the way. The fix is a few lines you write once and never think about again.
🧩 What it actually is
An output style is a persistent instruction that tells Claude how to format and deliver every response, not just the next one. Think of it the way you think of autocorrect settings on your phone. You configure it once, and from that point it quietly shapes every interaction without you lifting a finger. Output styles work the same way: you define the format you want and Claude applies it automatically, every time.
The three patterns most people actually need are:
🎯 Terse mode: short, direct answers with no framing or setup
💻 Code-only mode: raw code with no surrounding explanation
📋 Breakdown mode: full structured responses with steps, context, and detail
⚙️ How it works
Claude reads instructions in a specific order before generating any response. Whatever you put in your custom instructions or system prompt gets processed before your actual question does. That means you can set a standing order that shapes every answer from that point forward.
Here is what happens under the hood:
1️⃣ You write format instructions once, either in Custom Instructions on Claude.ai or in the system prompt if you use the API
2️⃣ Claude loads those instructions at the start of every new conversation
3️⃣ When you send a message, Claude applies your format rules before composing the response
4️⃣ If you need a different style for one specific message, say so inline and Claude adjusts temporarily without losing your default
The key detail is where you put the instructions. 💡 A message at the start of a chat only lasts that chat. Custom Instructions persist across every conversation you open.
🌍 Where you see it
📱 If you use Claude on your phone between meetings, terse mode means you get the answer without scrolling past setup
👨💻 If you are a developer asking for code snippets, code-only mode saves you from reading three paragraphs every single time
📚 If you are learning something new and need full context, breakdown mode gives you structure without having to request it each time
✍️ If you write emails or reports with Claude's help, you can lock in tone and formality once and it stays consistent
🛠️ Tools you actually use
🔧 Claude.ai Custom Instructions
This is the built-in feature on the Claude website and app that stores persistent instructions for how Claude should behave. It applies to every new conversation automatically and requires zero technical setup.
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai and sign in to your account
2️⃣ Click your name or profile icon in the bottom left corner and select Settings
3️⃣ Find the Custom Instructions section, type your format preference, and save
🔧 Anthropic API System Prompt
If you are building something with the Claude API, the system prompt is where you define output style for your entire application. Every request your app sends will have Claude already operating in the mode you specified.
1️⃣ Go to console.anthropic.com and create or sign into your account
2️⃣ In your API request body, add a "system" field before the "messages" array
3️⃣ Write your format instructions there, for example: "Respond in bullet points only. No preamble. No closing remarks."
💡 Try it yourself: step by step
You will set a terse output style on Claude.ai right now so every new conversation starts with Claude already knowing to be concise.
1️⃣ Open claude.ai in your browser and sign in to your account
2️⃣ Click your profile or name in the bottom left, go to Settings, and find Custom Instructions
3️⃣ Paste this exactly: "Be concise. Answer directly without preamble, summary, or closing remarks. If I ask for code, give only the code unless I ask for explanation."
4️⃣ Save the settings, open a brand new conversation, and ask Claude anything. The difference in response length is immediate and obvious.
Every new chat you open from this point will start with Claude already in the mode you chose.
What to do next
✅ Open Claude.ai settings right now and add even one sentence describing how you want responses formatted
✅ Try the code-only instruction for a week if you are a developer and notice how much faster the back and forth becomes
✅ If you use the API, move any format instructions you have been repeating across prompts into the system prompt instead
You have been doing extra work every single conversation that one setting could have handled for you all along.
