The audience was my homework

**The Audience Was My Homework**
Explaining something publicly is not what comes after understanding — it is often what produces it.

When you see someone talking confidently about AI online, the natural assumption is that they reached some level of mastery before they started. That assumption is frequently wrong, and missing it means missing one of the most useful things you can do to actually learn. The honest reason I started creating content about AI was not expertise. It was that I discovered explaining things to an audience was the only method that forced me to confront what I did not actually understand yet. The audience was not the reward that came after the learning. It was the assignment that made the learning happen.

**What it actually is**

Reading something alone gives you the feeling of understanding. Explaining it to someone else tests whether that feeling is real. When you read an article or watch a video, your brain fills gaps automatically with borrowed logic — it stitches things together and produces a sense of comprehension even when pieces are missing. When you try to explain the same thing to another person, those gaps become impossible to hide because you have to fill them with actual words in a coherent sequence. The best analogy is cooking: prepare dinner for yourself at midnight and you cut corners instinctively. Prepare the same meal for guests arriving tomorrow and suddenly every step gets real attention. The presence of an audience raises the stakes of your own thinking.

There is a documented psychological phenomenon called the Protégé Effect — the finding that people who prepare to teach material process it more deeply than those who study it purely for themselves. The mechanism is not mystical. It is structural.

**How it works**

The sequence is consistent regardless of the topic:

1️⃣ Choose a subject you want to genuinely understand — for example, how a large language model decides what word comes next in a sentence.
2️⃣ Attempt to explain it in plain language, as if writing for someone intelligent who has never studied technology.
3️⃣ Notice where you stop. There will be sentences you cannot finish, terms you cannot define without using the same term, logical steps you cannot connect. Mark every one. Those are your actual knowledge gaps, not approximations of them.
4️⃣ Go back and research specifically those gaps — not the topic broadly from the beginning again, but the precise points where your explanation broke down.
5️⃣ Attempt the explanation a second time. You will notice the difference immediately because this time the understanding was built on real gaps you located and closed.

The distinction between this and ordinary reading is that reading allows you to feel like you understood. Explaining forces you to verify that you did.

**Where you see it**

📚 Students who tutor classmates consistently outperform those who only study alone — the preparation required to teach locks material in at a depth that passive review never reaches
✍️ Engineers who write documentation for their own code regularly discover logical errors and missing edge cases they never caught during development itself
🎙️ Anyone who prepares a talk or a recorded explanation about a subject understands it at a level that cannot be reached through reading alone
🤝 Managers who explain a decision to their team are forced to think it through more rigorously than if they had simply made it without narrating their reasoning

**💡 Try it yourself: step by step**

Pick a technical topic you have read about recently but feel only partially confident explaining. Run this experiment right now — you do not need anything except a blank document:

1️⃣ Open a blank document or grab a piece of paper. Write the topic name at the top. Do not open any reference material yet, not even a single tab.
2️⃣ Write a three paragraph explanation as if you are writing to a smart friend who has no technical background. Use plain sentences. If you use a technical term, define it immediately in your own words — not a definition you remember reading, your actual words.
3️⃣ Read back what you wrote and mark every sentence where you got circular, vague, or simply could not finish the thought. Be honest. Those marks are the map of your real understanding, not the edges of your confidence.
4️⃣ Now research only those marked points specifically. Read about them, close the tabs, and rewrite the explanation entirely from scratch without looking at the first version.

What you will find is that the second version is noticeably sharper and more confident. That sharpness is the evidence that learning occurred. Not the reading you did before, but the attempt to explain that revealed exactly where the reading was not enough.

**What to do next**

✅ Pick one technical topic you have been consuming passively for weeks and write a three sentence plain language explanation of it right now with no references open
✅ Look into the Protégé Effect and the Feynman Technique separately — they describe the same underlying mechanism from slightly different angles and both are worth understanding in full
✅ Ask yourself which subjects in your field you consume regularly but have never once had to explain out loud to another person

The most honest credential you can build is a record of having figured something out in public.
