— Plugins vs Skills Explained

🔧 Claude Code
(Terminal)

Model Context Protocol

Plugins vs Skills Explained
Skills teach Claude one capability. Plugins bundle skills, commands, and tools into one job ready package that you never have to rebuild.

Most people who use Claude daily hit the same wall: they repeat the same instructions every single session. "Write in this style," "avoid these phrases," "structure responses like this." That repetition is a solved problem. Skills and plugins are the solution, and the distinction between them is what most users miss entirely.

**What a skill actually is**

A skill is a single, focused instruction set that teaches Claude how to behave in a specific situation. Think of it as a recipe: it specifies exactly what Claude should do, in what order, and in what tone. Every time Claude reads the skill, it performs the same way.

A skill named "write a technical article" teaches Claude:

🎯 The required language register and tone from the first word
📐 The article structure from opening line to closing sentence
✋ Phrases and patterns it must never use under any circumstances
🔁 How to verify its output before delivering it

A skill adds no new tools to Claude. It shapes how Claude thinks and responds within its existing capabilities.

**How a plugin is different**

A plugin is not a single instruction. It is a complete package. It bundles skills plus commands plus tools into one file. If a skill is the recipe, a plugin is the full kitchen: the recipe is in, the knives are ready, and the ingredients are in place.

Imagine you work in content production. A writing plugin might include:

🧠 A skill for writing articles
🔍 A skill for researching and summarizing sources
⚡ A /publish command that formats the file for distribution
🌐 A tool that connects to the internet for live information

Instead of briefing Claude at the start of every session, the plugin tells it from second one: you are in writing mode, and this is how you operate.

**Where you see the difference**

The problem most users face is not that Claude is incapable. It is that Claude starts from zero every session. Skills and plugins close that gap permanently:

🔁 A skill solves one problem once and for good
📦 A plugin solves an entire work scenario once and for good
👥 Plugins are shareable — hand one to a colleague and they get the exact same behavior without any setup
🧩 Skills are the building blocks. A plugin is the finished structure.

**🛠️ Tools you actually use**

🔧 Claude Code
The primary environment where skills and plugins live. Claude Code is Anthropic's professional interface for Claude, and it is where you write SKILL.md files and connect them to your projects. Every SKILL.md file placed inside a project directory is read automatically by Claude at the start of each session in that folder.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Download from claude.ai/download or install via terminal with: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
2️⃣ Open your project folder and type claude in the terminal to launch the session
3️⃣ Create a file named SKILL.md inside that folder and Claude reads it automatically from that point forward

🔧 MCP (Model Context Protocol)
The technical framework that allows plugins to connect external tools to Claude. Instead of Claude operating in isolation from the rest of your stack, MCP lets it communicate with databases, external APIs, and third-party services directly inside a conversation.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Open Claude Code and navigate to the MCP settings panel
2️⃣ Choose an MCP server from the available list — hundreds of ready-made options exist covering search, memory, databases, and more
3️⃣ Connect it to your project and Claude can use that tool immediately in every session from that point on

**💡 Try it yourself: step by step**

The goal here is to write a simple skill that teaches Claude to respond in your own style instead of its default pattern.

1️⃣ Open Claude Code in any folder on your machine
2️⃣ Create a new file called SKILL.md and write this inside it exactly: "When answering any question, use a direct and simple style. Never say certainly or of course. Start the response immediately with the information."
3️⃣ Ask Claude the same question you normally would in a fresh session
4️⃣ Notice the shift in how it responds. That difference is the skill running. It is not a coincidence and it is not random.

Once you see the difference, add more instructions. Every line you add is another part of the skill growing. When you combine several skills with commands and external tools, you have the foundation of a real plugin.

**What to do next**

✅ Write one skill for the instruction you repeat most often with Claude and measure the change from the very next session
✅ Search "MCP servers list" and explore what tools you can connect to Claude in under two minutes
✅ Ask yourself what is the one thing you always explain to Claude at the start of a session — that is your first skill waiting to be written

The gap between someone who uses Claude and someone who builds with it is one small file called SKILL.md.
