— Claude Cowork Is Not Chat

🔧 CLAUDE.md

Claude Code

🔧 MCP Servers

Claude Code
MCP Servers

Claude Cowork Is Not Chat
One setup, every session ready. The difference is not the tool — it is how you configure it.

Most people use Claude the same way they use a search engine: open a new tab, describe what they need, and start over from scratch every single time. Cowork breaks that pattern entirely. It is a working environment you configure once, and every session that follows begins with Claude already knowing your project, your style, and your rules. The setup is the product. The tool is just the container.

What it actually is

Claude Cowork is not a smarter chat interface. It is a persistent working environment where Claude operates alongside you rather than waiting for you to re-explain context it should already have. Think of the difference between a contractor who shows up each day having forgotten your entire project versus one who keeps a running brief and picks up exactly where you left off. The second one does not forget. Claude in Cowork works the same way — but only if you give it the brief.

How it works

Cowork becomes genuinely useful the moment you give Claude three things to carry between sessions:

🧠 Instructions (CLAUDE.md): A plain text file that tells Claude who you are, what the project is, your preferred style, and the rules with no exceptions. Claude reads this automatically at the start of every session.
🎯 Skills: Specialized instruction templates that define exactly how Claude handles a recurring task. One skill for your writing voice, another for code review standards, another for how you want data summarized.
🔗 Integrations (MCP): Direct connections to external tools like Notion, GitHub, or your databases, so Claude works with your actual data rather than placeholders.

The order matters:
1️⃣ Claude reads your CLAUDE.md and loads the full project context
2️⃣ When you invoke a skill, its task-specific rules layer on top of that base
3️⃣ MCP connections let Claude pull live information instead of relying on what you paste in

Put all three together and the session starts already in motion.

Where you see it

The real value shows up in patterns you probably already live inside:

💼 Freelancers managing multiple clients: a separate instruction file per client means tone, terminology, and context switch automatically, not manually.
🧑‍💻 Developers on ongoing projects: Claude knows the codebase conventions, architectural decisions, and naming patterns from the first day through the last commit.
✍️ Content creators: one skill captures your voice so completely that Claude stops asking clarifying questions and starts producing.
📊 Analysts and managers: standing rules about how data gets presented, what always gets summarized, and what always needs to be spelled out in full.

🛠️ Tools you actually use

🔧 CLAUDE.md
This plain text file is the foundation of every Cowork setup. Anything you write here, Claude reads automatically at the start of every session. Project name, goals, audience, tone, and a clear list of things Claude must never do.

How to get started:
1️⃣ Open your project folder in Claude Code
2️⃣ Create a file named CLAUDE.md at the root of that folder
3️⃣ Write your instructions in plain language — there is no required format, Claude understands natural text

🔧 Skills
A skill is a dedicated instruction file for a specific recurring task. Instead of explaining your process every session, you write it once as a skill and invoke it with a single word or phrase.

How to get started:
1️⃣ Create a folder named skills inside the .claude directory in your project
2️⃣ For each task type, create a new SKILL.md file and write the full instructions inside it
3️⃣ In your main CLAUDE.md, tell Claude when and how to call each skill

🔧 MCP Servers
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is how you connect Claude directly to external tools — Notion, GitHub, Slack, your own databases — so it pulls real information rather than working from whatever you remember to paste in.

How to get started:
1️⃣ Open Claude Code settings
2️⃣ Navigate to the MCP Servers section
3️⃣ Choose the tool you want to connect and follow its specific setup guide

💡 Try it yourself: step by step

Goal: configure a Claude session that begins fully briefed on your project without you typing a single word of explanation.

1️⃣ Open Claude Code and navigate to your project folder, or create a new one for this exercise
2️⃣ Create a CLAUDE.md file and write the following: the project name, what it is trying to accomplish, who the audience is, the tone you prefer, and at least two hard rules Claude must always follow
3️⃣ Save the file, then start a fresh Claude Code session and ask it directly: "What do you know about this project?"
4️⃣ Watch Claude respond with everything you wrote — without you repeating a single line of it

That moment is the point. The session did not start from zero. It started from where you left off.

What to do next

✅ Build a CLAUDE.md file for your most active project today and test it in a new session
✅ Identify one task you explain to Claude repeatedly and write it as a dedicated skill
✅ Ask yourself which external tool you spend the most time copying data from — that is your first MCP candidate

The configuration you invest in today is the explanation you never have to give again.
