🔧 Cursor
🔧 Xcode
App Store.
Mac App Store

**One Person Ported A Whole Game To iPhone**
You no longer need a studio or a team to ship something ambitious.
For decades, porting a game from PC to a new platform meant hiring engineers, rebuilding systems, and months of patient debugging handled by multiple people working in parallel. One developer just did it alone, on the side. That shift is worth paying close attention to.
**What it actually is**
Porting a game means taking code written for one platform and making it run natively on another. Not through emulation, where old code runs inside a compatibility layer the device has to carry everywhere. Actually rewriting the parts that talk directly to the hardware, so the game behaves like it was built for iPhone from the first day.
The difference is visible to anyone who plays both versions. Emulation is slow, constrained, and awkward at the edges. A native port runs the way iOS expects: fast, smooth, and integrated with the rest of the system.
That kind of work used to require a team. It no longer does.
**How it works**
Old game code is typically written in C or C++, relying on libraries that modern operating systems do not support. The developer needs to understand what every function does, find the iOS equivalent, and rewrite the connection points without breaking the logic underneath. That means reading a lot of code written by other people, often years or decades ago.
AI changes the shape of that problem completely:
1️⃣ The developer feeds sections of old code to the AI and asks it to explain what each function does
2️⃣ The AI identifies which parts cannot run on iOS and suggests modern alternatives
3️⃣ The developer writes the new code, with the AI generating working first drafts of each component
4️⃣ When errors appear during testing, the developer pastes the error message into the AI and gets a targeted fix immediately
What used to take a team of five and a full year of work can now take one person and a few focused months. The developer still has to understand what they are building. The AI handles the volume.
**Where you see it**
🎮 Independent developers reviving cult classic games for modern devices
📱 Solo founders shipping iOS apps with no engineering team behind them
🏗️ Web engineers entering native app territory for the first time without formal training
🔁 Small teams doing work that used to require budgets and headcounts they simply did not have
The pattern is the same across all of these: AI does not replace the builder. It removes the ceiling on what one builder can accomplish alone.
**🛠️ Tools you actually use**
🔧 Cursor
A code editor with AI built into the core experience, not added as a plugin. You can open any codebase, select a function, and ask what it does in plain language. You can describe what you want to build and get a working first draft. This is where the developer and the AI actually work together, in the same environment, on the same file.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to cursor.com and download the free version
2️⃣ Open any existing project or code file you want to understand or modify
3️⃣ Press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows and describe what you want in plain language
🔧 Claude (by Anthropic)
Claude can read large amounts of code in one session and reason about the full picture, not just isolated snippets. This makes it especially useful for understanding a legacy codebase before you start changing anything, and for planning the architecture of a port before writing a single line of new code.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Go to claude.ai and create a free account
2️⃣ Paste the code you want to understand or convert directly into the conversation
3️⃣ Ask a specific question: "What does this function do?" or "How would I rewrite this to run on iOS?"
🔧 Xcode
Apple's official development environment for building iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps. You need it to compile iOS code, run apps on the simulator, and submit to the App Store.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Download it free from the Mac App Store (requires macOS and several gigabytes of storage)
2️⃣ Open a new project and select "App" from the iOS template options
3️⃣ Use Claude or Cursor alongside Xcode: when you see an error message, paste the full text into the AI rather than guessing at what it means
**💡 Try it yourself: step by step**
Say you have an existing project written in Python or JavaScript and you want to understand what it would take to bring its core logic to iPhone.
1️⃣ Open Claude and write: "I have code written in Python that does [describe exactly what it does]. What would I need to learn and build to bring this logic into an iPhone app?"
2️⃣ Claude will give you a clear roadmap: what to learn first, what to build first, and where the main gaps are between your current environment and iOS
3️⃣ Open Xcode and start a new blank project. You do not need to understand everything at once. For every screen or setting you do not recognize, ask the AI what it is and what it controls
4️⃣ By the end of your first session you will have an app running on the Xcode simulator that does one thing from your original project. That is a real starting point, not a tutorial exercise.
**What to do next**
✅ Open Cursor with any code file you already have and ask it to explain the file in plain language
✅ Search for solo developer stories on X and IndieHackers, specifically people who shipped with AI assistance
✅ Ask yourself which project you kept putting off because it felt too large for one person. Answer that question again now.
The constraint was never your ability. It was the volume of work one person could hold at once. That volume just changed.
