Watch this bar before Claude slows down

🔧 Claude.ai

🔧 Anthropic Console Tokenizer

🔧 tiktoken
2️⃣ في ملف بايثون اكتب: import tiktoken ثم enc = tiktoken.get_encoding("cl100k_base")

**Watch this bar before Claude slows down**
The context window has a ceiling, and knowing where you stand on it keeps every answer sharp.

Most people assume Claude gets worse over a long conversation because the AI is "confused" or "tired." The real reason is simpler and more fixable: you ran out of working memory. Every AI model operates within a hard limit on how much text it can hold in its attention at once. When a conversation fills that limit, the model starts treating recent messages as more important than earlier ones, and quality quietly drops. The bar you see in Claude's interface tells you exactly where that threshold is.

**Section 1 — What it actually is**

Claude does not just read your latest message. Every time you send a prompt, the model reads the entire conversation from the very beginning: your original question, every follow-up, every answer it gave back. All of that counts toward a shared limit measured in units called tokens (Tokens). One token is roughly three to four characters, so a single paragraph might be 80 to 120 tokens.

The total limit is called the context window. Think of it like a whiteboard with a fixed surface area. Every exchange writes on that whiteboard. When you reach the edge, the model does not erase anything explicitly, it just starts weighting newer content more heavily while older context fades from its effective attention. The bar in Claude's interface is a live measure of how full that whiteboard is.

**Section 2 — How it works**

Here is what happens under the hood with every message you send:

1️⃣ Your message is split into tokens by the model's internal tokenizer
2️⃣ Those tokens are added to the running total for the entire conversation
3️⃣ Claude generates a response, which also adds tokens to the same total
4️⃣ The context bar updates to reflect the new percentage of the window used
5️⃣ Once the window is full, the model cannot accept additional input without starting fresh

Token capacity varies by model version:
📏 Claude 3.5 Sonnet supports up to 200,000 tokens
📏 Claude 3 Opus has a similar ceiling
📏 Older or lighter models may cap at 100,000 tokens

A long document, a several-hour brainstorm, or repeated large code blocks all consume that budget quickly. The bar is your early warning system.

**Section 3 — Where you see it**

You hit this limit in real, everyday use without realizing it:

📝 Editing a long document across dozens of exchanges in a single thread
💻 Debugging a codebase where you keep pasting updated files into the same conversation
🔍 Asking Claude to analyze a lengthy document you pasted at the very start of the session
🧑‍💼 Running a long strategy session where context from the opening exchange still matters at the end

In all of these cases, the bar tells you when to stop, summarize the important context, and start a new thread rather than watching quality erode silently.

**Section 4 — 🛠️ Tools you actually use**

🔧 Claude.ai
The official Claude web interface. The context bar is built directly into the input area and updates live as you type and receive responses. Nothing to install, it is there from day one.
How to find and read the bar:
1️⃣ Open claude.ai in your browser and start or open any conversation
2️⃣ Look at the bottom of the input box and you will see a small indicator showing how many tokens you have used against the model's total capacity
3️⃣ Watch it increment after each exchange, especially after you paste large blocks of text

🔧 Anthropic Console Tokenizer
A free tool from Anthropic that lets you paste any text and see exactly how many tokens it contains before you send it to the model. Useful for planning how much of the context window you have left before committing a large paste.
How to use it:
1️⃣ Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in with your Anthropic account
2️⃣ Navigate to the "Tokenize" tool in the developer console
3️⃣ Paste your text and the token count appears immediately — use this to budget your prompts before sending large documents

🔧 tiktoken
An open source Python library from OpenAI that counts tokens programmatically. It works as a solid approximation for Claude's tokenization and is the standard tool for anyone building something that needs to manage context at scale.
How to get started:
1️⃣ Install it with the command: pip install tiktoken
2️⃣ In a Python file write: import tiktoken then enc = tiktoken.get_encoding("cl100k_base")
3️⃣ Run: len(enc.encode("your text here")) to get the token count for any string before you send it

**Section 5 — 💡 Try it yourself: step by step**

Scenario: you have a report or document you want Claude to work through with you.

1️⃣ Open claude.ai and start a completely new conversation. Do not reuse an old thread that already has accumulated messages in it.
2️⃣ Paste your full document as the first message and send it. Immediately look at the context bar. Notice how far it jumped from just that one paste.
3️⃣ Ask Claude a specific question about the document, something like "Summarize this in five key points." After the response arrives, check the bar again.
4️⃣ Send three or four more follow-up messages. Each time, watch the bar move and pay attention to whether Claude's answers remain as precise and context-aware as the first response was.

What you will notice: at around 70 to 80 percent capacity, answers may start feeling slightly more generic or may miss details from earlier in the conversation. That is your signal to open a new thread and carry forward only the context that actually matters for the next phase of the work.

**Section 6 — What to do next**

✅ In your next Claude session, glance at the context bar early and set a personal threshold for when you will open a new conversation
✅ If you work with long documents regularly, try breaking the work into separate sessions instead of pushing everything into a single thread
✅ Search Anthropic's documentation for "Prompt Caching" if you are a developer and want to reuse expensive context without burning tokens on every single call

Context is not infinite. Managing it is the simplest habit that separates people who occasionally use AI from people who consistently get sharp, useful work out of it.
